When examined in the case of a suspected nerve damage, the Rydel Seiffer tuning fork allows early detection of so-called polyneuropathy damage. One uses the fact that the vibration sensation of peripheral nerves is impaired first (pallesthesia).
The Rydel Seiffer Tuning Fork has two scaled weights on the cheeks of the tuning fork, reducing the 128 Hz tuning fork to 64 Hz, thereby allowing you to quantify any nerve failures. To check the sensation of vibration put the struck and swinging tuning fork on the inter-toe joint of the big toe. The patient indicates the time when he no longer feels the vibrations. The examiner reads this time on the scale.
Normal value in younger people is "8" (no nerve damage). With age, vibration levels above 6/8 are still considered normal. Smaller values should be medically clarified, as it may be an early form of serious nerve damage.
Damage to the peripheral nerves often occurs in the course of diabetes. Other causes include vitamin B-12 deficiency, mostly in alcoholism, and bacterial neoplasms.
